The Civic parish of Snape with Thorp comprises 1854 hectares, approximately 190 homes and 410 residents (source 2011 Census Profile).
The Parish Council (PC) is the first tier of local government. The Council has responsibility for oversight of civic duties, for example, it has responsibility for local amenities including the Avenue, greens, playing field, village seats, pumps and trees on the village greens. One of the main costs for the Council annually is the grass cutting and village maintenance contract. The Council liaises with the Highways Department at NYCC on any highway matters in the Parish and, with the help of District Council officers, has developed recently an Emergency plan.
The Council receives its only funding via the precept which is set annually by the Council and collected via the Hambleton District Council (HDC).
The Parish Council is always asked to comment on any planning application in the parish and participates in other consultations on policies of the District and County Council affecting the community. The Council has no Committees – until late 2020 there was a Playing Field Committee. The Playing Field was on a long term lease from HDC but the PC acquired ownership via an asset transfer from HDC a few years ago.
