SNAPE WITH THORP PARISH COUNCIL

NEWSLETTER – August 2021

  1. The Parish Council (PC) met on Monday 26 July.  This newsletter provides an update on a number of issues discussed at the meeting and other matters of general interest.

  1. Outline Planning application for up to 32 houses on the Manor House (Prices Pavings and Tile Ltd) site (reference 20/02047/OUT).   District Councillor David Webster advised the Parish Council that the District Council awaits further information from the applicant.  The outstanding issues remain access, flooding risk and affordable housing.  If you have not already commented on the application there is still time to do so.  Please go to Hambleton District Council’s Planning portal or contact the Clerk who will assist you in finding the appropriate website.
  2. The Police were represented at the meeting and presented a report on recent offences in the wider ward area.  Residents are reminded to take precautions to secure their homes, garages and outbuildings as there have been opportunist burglaries in the locality.  Security is especially important when warm weather means windows are open more.

  1. The Contractor will commence work on the kerbing in August and will ensure the works are completed before the August Bank Holiday weekend.

  1. A number of comments had been received direct to the Council and Councillors regarding grass cutting in the Avenue and village. The issues raised were discussed by the Council.  The Council would like to confirm that the grass between the old trees remained uncut longer than intended this year.  It was not the Council’s intention to leave the area to grow wild but only to leave the growth until the daffodil leaves died back.  In future the grass between the old trees will be cut as soon as possible after the daffodil bulbs have died back.  The area between the new trees on both sides of the avenue will be left as no-mow areas to encourage wild flowers and wild life under the management of the Snape Climate and Conservation Group.

  1. A small group exists to undertake maintenance activities eg cleaning out the beck, repairing village benches etc.   If you are interested in being involved please contact Sara Pringle (contact details are given below).
  2. The Dog Warden is taking an active interest in dogs wandering unaccompanied around the village and subsequent fouling.

  1. NYCC has introduced a new digital Demand Responsive bus service – YorBus - for a trial period, anticipated to be 12 months.  As part of informing local residents about the new YorBus service, a travelling roadshow bus will park near Snape Institute on Tuesday 17th August between 12.30pm and 1.30pm.  Please drop in to find out more about the service.

  1. The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee will be celebrated over the weekend of Thursday 2nd to Sunday 5th June 2022.  It is hoped that this extended period will be an opportunity for communities to come together to celebrate this historic milestone.  In the past the parish has held a range of events and activities to commemorate the previous jubilees.  These have been organised by a group of parishioners.  The Parish Council would like to hear from any volunteers to be involved in a Committee to arrange activities on behalf of the community.

  1. The National Fraud Intelligence Bureau (NFIB) is warning the public to be vigilant of scam calls that appear to be coming from numbers similar to their own.

• Commonly, the first seven digits (07nnnnn) match the victim’s own number. The calls impersonate well-known government organisations, or law enforcement agencies, and will ask the recipient of the call to “press 1” in order to speak with an advisor, or police officer, about unpaid fines or police warrants.

• In May Action Fraud received 2,110 scam call reports where the caller’s number matched the first seven digits of the victim’s own phone number. Of these 1,426 (68%) referred to HMRC or National Insurance.

• Victims have also reported receiving these types of calls and messaging via widely used messaging apps such as WhatsApp.

• Government and law enforcement agencies will not notify you about unpaid fines or outstanding police warrants by calling or texting you. Do not respond to any calls or texts you receive about these.

• If you receive a suspicious text message, you can report it by forwarding the message to 7726 (this service is free of charge). Suspicious telephone/mobile calls can be reported to Action Fraud at

  1. Tees, Esk and Wear Valley NHS Foundation Trust (TEWV): 24 hour crisis helpline is 0800 0516171. This number has superseded any local numbers or 03000 numbers previously in use.  The number is freephone, available 24 hours a day, and is there for anyone of any age experiencing a mental health crisis in the TEWV area (County Durham, Darlington, Teesside, North Yorkshire, Selby and York).

Information for adults experiencing a mental health crisis can be found here: https://www.tewv.nhs.uk/services/crisisadvice/

Information for children and young people experiencing a mental health crisis: https://www.tewv.nhs.uk/services/camhscrisis/

  1. Meetings are now held face to face and are always open for members of the public to attend unless the Council advises otherwise.

  1. If you have any queries or comments to make regarding the Parish Council please contact the Clerk.
